Second Office

Today is another big day in the history of iWillStudy.com. We have now shifted our office at an entirely new location at Ahmedabad. Today was my first day at this new office.

I was sick from last few days, and hence was not involved in the finishing work which was going on to renovate the office area. My teammates - Alpesh and Shekhar worked days and nights to get the work completed. They spent numerous days to bring the exact furniture and other amenities in place.

My interactions with students are growing everyday. I am so happy that they treat me as their friend. After my seminars, I find them liking iWillStudy.com's Facebook page. Also, many of them sends friend request on Facebook & Google-Talk. My experiences with social media and levels of interactions are taking new shapes every day. I am never reluctant to accept friend requests of my students/customers on Facebook. I am delighted that they believe in me.

Google-Talk chat requests are on the roll too. With every seminar/workshop of iWillStudy.com I see a lot of emails and chat requests on my email too. And yeah, I love to answer their queries via emails or via chat too. There are times when I teach many of them in parallel over different chat platforms.

My findings are random too. I am learning their behavior everyday. Many of them are intellectual, many confused, many interesting & many friendly. My finding says that a student always want to learn new things, and is over-burdened with traditional styles of teaching. A sense of friendliness and new-trends in colleges should be set up to make teaching more effective.

It's been one year

I wanted to make this blog post a special one. Had thought of writing this post for hours and make this memorable. Even I was having this thought since evening, but this to-do list didn't allowed me to spend time for long. Now it's 04.44am, and am just doing a formality to quote about this special day.

Yeah, it is been exactly one year I left my last job. And with that, it is also the first anniversary of my startup. I may overpass the character limits of this blog if I try to pen down the moments of the last one year. I will surely write about these days for sure. The struggle I did to make this happen.

Today I am happy to see how the startup is growing. I am thankful to all friends and people who in some manner or other helped me to envision and execute my dreams. A lot of things changed in the past year. A lot to share over here.

Taking Risk and Keeping Patience - a key to Startups

Disliking the longer version of conscious mind in this dry state. I had always loved the pleasure of free-flowing thoughts. Today, after working continuously from a week to week, without any break is ruining my peaceful state of mind. I need a break .. a free-fall break where I can think innovative .. where I can think beyond the fenced constraints .. where I can remove the artificial mask which I wear so often.

My experiences with Start-up life is growing up everyday. I have seen people who are doing the same startup with a small team and still struggling from many years (more than 4 years). I have seen people who did a startup, sold it and living a lavish life. I have seen people who are new to startups(<4 years). I have seen people who are influencing startups with their help(in any which way), but are not the part of particular startups. I have seen people who are not a part of startups, but who understands the game. I have seen people who are working for startups, but are never in the founders list. I have seen people who babbles about startups, but are useless every time.

And I was singing - 'Hum kis gali jaa rahe hain..'. Well that's absolutely not my favorite song, neither the singer has any better impression in my mind. But this is a nice song for the situation.

Risk analysis is a game. Calculated risk is a job. It is very important for a startup to pounder at. But, it's not the food for every team member. I am a risk taker, and I have a guy who calculates and keep a fence of constraints around me to maintain a decorum of damage control.

Patience is the key. Losing patience very often is not bad at all. Self-assessment is appreciated. It's a challenge to keep yourself cool and be patient. It's another game.. a learning.

Making graphs, models and processes is admirable job. Obviously pre-requisite for a business. You just have to differentiate the kind of startup you are into. Risk and patience are the two major ingredients to play this game. Else, you can open a grocery shop and maintain the graphs/models/processes to achieve the goals. But, if you are innovating the market and making a space in the blue ocean, play with the risks. Don't be more scientific.

I had left a comfortable life of living with family in August 2002. It's been more than 8 years now. Indeed a long journey... sigh!

Connecting the dots for these 8 years is a tedious task, but an important task for sure. I can see a dream tag cloud of 1000s of new people whom I met, communicated, studied or worked with. That cloud often comes in my dream where those faces talk and utter different kind of dialogs, opinions and arguments. Indeed a revolving random cloud.

Eight years back, I was 18 year old innocent kid. The only interaction with outside world was with friends at school and playground. Other interactions were with the shopkeepers, and family friends. Nothing else.

Gradually, year after year, I learnt the ways of talking and handling different situations. Oh, yeah ! a long learning experience.

Entrepreneurs are stubborn

I had read in many articles and books - Entrepreneurs are stubborn jerks.

Also, I witnessed many authors writing about startups that the first idea always fails. Well, I don't love reading and I don't appreciate following books (another sign of a stubborn entrepreneur). I love experimenting, I love exploring and I love learning from my experiences. Well, thats passion of experimenting, exploring and learning may sound foolish. This passion may lead to disastrous circumstances. That passion may slower down your speed of success and growth. But, I feel that this is the right way of doing a startup. I don't believe in lots of calculation and writing plans. Of course, I do appreciate planning up with a calculated risk. I do appreciate a short business plan as suggested by Guy Kawasaki (Art of the Start).

And, for every aspiring entrepreneur I would suggest the same thing. Don't follow others. Don't run behind anybody else's idea. Follow your heart. Learn from people. Always listen to them, discuss your ideas, manipulate the arguments. Do all this for the sake of learning and getting your own doubts clear.

And remember the key - BE STUBBORN !

I am thinking to restart blogging. A lot of things have changed in life. Doing a startup and facing the challenges from last 10months is too much fun. Getting along with new people, co-relating the common objective among the team mates, and struggling with the lower bank balance are few of the challenges we have had faced.

But, today I am a satisfied young entrepreneur. I am leading and living my dream. I am happy to see people around me talking and working for achieving the similar dream. I am obliged to many of my friends and team-mates who are always there to take this challenge ahead.

The Judgement Day & Me

20 years back, I was enjoying a picnic along with my family and friends near a place around Nasik, Maharashtra. There were people from Air Force families - people who salutes national interests over religion, caste & breed. I was in standard 4th, and was enjoying good time with my friend Gold Hassan in the picnic bus. My dad was the hero of that time - the rockstar with his Philips music system & some cordless mic that he used to show off very often. We all were singing, cracking jokes of early 90s. I remember wearing a pink jeans & flashy t-shirt.

I don't have so retentive and sharp memory, but the dizzy one where few moments flash randomly & surprises me. We were coming back from the picnic, and I glanced out at a very famous mosque on the way to our Air Force camp - Deolali. That mosque's wall was painted black with some slogans. Gold's dad pointed out that thing to his wife, and I had picked up the resentment in their eyes. No one spoke anything, and the music grew louder with antakshri.

That was the first time when I realized that there is something happened on the name of religion. Back home, I asked my dad about the very incident. He summarized the story about Babri Masjid demolition that had happened few days back. I overshoot multiple questions & he answered effectively. I don't remember anything afterward.

Today, after so many years, I witnessed the judgement of Ayodhya & was moved. I was moved by looking at the journey I have traveled. I have seen the old age India, and now the newer one.

A thought on education in B-grade Engineering colleges

This post is with respect to this discussion post in " Education Professionals in India" group on LinkedIn.

I am not in education industry from decades, but I intend to:)

The valuable discussion above threw light on various aspects of existing void in education field, as well as the guidelines for students to perform better. They said a lot of good things and I understand them clearly.

I want to make a case-study on Gujarat. When I had passed out my engineering (2002-06) there were only 27-28 colleges. Now they are grown 3 times more in number. I find that 70%-90% lecturers in my college and other colleges are from my junior batches. They teach the same thing what they were taught few years back. They lack teaching skills, basic fundamentals, confidence, motivation and every negative thing that you can think of. They use local books which are written by the so called dignified professors of the college.

Students who passed out in year 2007,08,09 are teaching as permanent lecturers.

So, is this the void that there are no experienced faculties available? May be true. But, these lecturers are paid 25K per month. Is this sufficient to survive in cities like Ahemdabad, surat, baroda, rajkot, jamnagar, anand, etc?

Internal politics of senior old professors may be the another big factor. I am serious, I have seen this. Many of old profs are not allowing good teachers to join their colleges. They fear about their existence and future.

I will deny that there is no work done on revising the syllabus. I used to learn 'BASIC programming' in my 1st semester, now they are teaching C and C++. There are many examples like that. But, this is the toughest challenge. How these kids who are ironically lecturers now, can teach without any experiences in teaching?

Thanks for discussing relevant solutions of the discussed problems. Industry participation is a superb idea, but I never found them focused in my universities and colleges. I found companies taking irregular seminars in odd hours and were never dedicated. The focus of other agencies and local startups were a failure because of many factors. Lack of scalability, confidence, support may be the possible reasons.

I am in favor of a focused startup which can deliver the required education to these B-grade colleges. Group of IITians, IIM people, teachers and industrial veterans can join hands in teaching and help the poor students.

Bingo !! I loved it .. This is the way I jumped on the floor when I translated a document. It was a ‘English’ to ‘Hindi’ translation.

But, when I started reading the translated document, I was really disappointed.

Here is a translated para from ‘English’ to ‘hindi’ that doesn’t make any sense:

My Learning : Sports v/s Studies :)

I am a programmer. I experienced a very strange thing that was an unusual feeling. I saw many programmers in my life. I saw how some one grows with an astute pace in programming. I saw people losing their programming capabilities, even if they were good programmers in their time.

I experienced that if a programmer works with one who can code better then him, then gradually his programming skills decreases. I mean, if both programmers are working on a same level, then the one with low programming capability always falls down and other one grows more. The better programmer in the group speeds up with nice pace and leave the other one far behind. The other one loses him on the way and tries to avoid the bad consequences and loses charm in practicing more.

Now, the thought process !!

Lets say there are two players of Table Tennis - one with extremely better capability then the other. Now, you will easily find that the low performer really grows rapidly by playing with a better partner. Even in games like cricket or football, the low performers really show appreciable changes when they play with good players.

This is what that made me to think a lot when I was playing Table Tennis today with the TT champ of my hostel. I was learning quickly !!

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds

Most of us surround ourselves with individuals who support us in staying the way we are. The unfortunate truth is that when you decide to become a great spirit -- to pursue a great adventure -- many of the people around you will not support you.

Often with good intention they will tell you familiar things like "be realistic," "slow down -- take your time," "be careful," or "don't do anything rash."

I have found that, "When you pursue greatness, you represent the courage that others don't have." (That sentence is important -- please read it again until you FULLY understand it.)

Consequently, when you succeed, they can no longer tell themselves and others their own "good stories" about why they don't succeed. You break through their excuses for staying in an unfulfilled or dissatisfied life.

For this reason, it is absolutely imperative that you surround yourself with great spirits -- continually! Like-minded individuals who have the same vision and are going the same places you are going. People who believe in you, support you, sometimes even push you.

One of the greatest decisions I made several years ago was that "I would no longer spend quantity time with people that I did not want to become." This is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made -- and also one of the most powerful.

I looked at the crowd I was spending time with and they were great people; and yet, they were not going in the same direction as me. They did not have the same goals for their life. The same passion.

well its great for an average student like me. it was my dream to score 70+ in my BE career. and at last i got it. thanks to god and my friends. thanks to my room partners, rajesh and ashish who managed to live with me in my exam days.. things were really tough that timesss.. even i was never serious in examination days.. but, yeah the sleepless nights i can't forget et all...

writing functional specification

well, i have to submit the functional spec of my project on monday.. havn't done anything till now. i don't have much experience in writing functional specs.

actually, i am developing a front end for the product image verilog. the front end for product image vhdl is available in the company but it really looks dead and much simple. now, i don't know about the features i shud include in the new one. the earlier gui is written in c++. now i hav two options to write the codes. either in jfc swing or swt... i have compared both of them and after lots of reading i concluded to work in swing.

now, the problem is writing functional specs. i have collected the stuffs and topics to include. but b4 starting anything i prepared a set of questionnaire. i asked a lot of questions from rajesh garg..one of my team member. but still the picture is not clear in my mind. the front end gui includes not many features.. but its integration with other simulators and fpga is a tough job.. i think..

lets hope i will succeed in writing functional specs .. if anyone can help then plz favor.

The Long Journey

just coming back after a long journey. within two days i was at many places :-
1.mumbai-powai,ghatkopar,dadar
2.pune
3.ahemdabad
4.s'nagar
5.sayla
6.ahemdabad(bac)
7.mumbai(bac)-boriwali,andheri,powai

and, these all travelling in mere 48hours stressed me till i lost all my energy and i reached my room at mumbai. i just fell on the bed. but, it was not over. within half an hour i had to reach to office. ...

My mouth get sealed whenever nikhilesh and shish talks. i act like a statue as i feel as i don't know anything of this world. they are masters of their field. they can talk on any field of life... no doubt about their area of work.. they are genius.

well, i got a mail from ccet alumini group.. and mr. virendra jhala our one of the most respected senior and faculty.. and they were feeling proud regarding the emerging knowledge geeks of ccet :))
isn't it cool , he was really proud of our winning in invite competition by gil and ibm. i can remember, the days when i was surrounded by this project work , along with my tough examination time.. and the viva practicals.. and her last day in college.. god, that was one of the toughest time in my life.. when i was feeling like a machine.. even , i felt sometimes bad.. sometimes i felt to resign from the project.. sometimes i felt i am not doin good to my loving friends.. etc etc.
well, now my loving friends can see, that was not a wasteful activity in which i was busy.. !

Adapting in Mumbai

well, Mumbai is not a new place for me. But, as my engineering college days ended last december, am feeling bit of loneliness here. But, yeah trying to adapt fast. Enjoying bit at Office and at weekends.
